Episode 15 :: Saving fuel in business - transcript
[Animated opening sequence, music and title: EECA Business: The Energy Spot]
Open on Jared getting out of a small car, it’s a Prius. We see machinery in the background. He says to us:
Running a vehicle can be an expensive business, but what if you’ve got more than one?
We pull back to show that Jared is standing in a quarry – and we see, lined up in a row, are some huge vehicles: Trucks loaded with aggregate, plus a few smaller trucks, and other vehicles – the Winstone Aggregates fleet.
Jared is dwarfed by the truck at the front, its wheel is almost as high as him with huge tread - it’s massive.
Winstone Aggregates are cutting their fleet running costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars and making their business more competitive. Right Brett?
Jared is now joined by Brett Horrobin a graphic appears with his details:
Brett Horrobin, Transport Manager | Winstone Aggregates
Brett now takes us through the company’s fuel-efficiency strategy, he shows Jared the engine of one of the trucks to see how huge the engine is and Brett says:
Well Jared, we choose modern fuel-efficient engines that work hard, have lower emissions and drink less.
The two are standing next to the huge front tyre, and Jared says:
Properly inflated tyres play a big role too eh?
Brett replies:
Absolutely.
Now the two go round the back of the truck and we see the load is being secured as Brett says:
We cover our trailers, whether loaded or not, to reduce drag, saving around 8% in fuel.
We see shots of Brett interacting with a driver, a laptop on the seat has images of telemetry graphs. As we see a graph that reads ‘Fleet Fuel Efficiency – Nov 09’ Brett says:
Driver support is key, so we put ours on a fuel-efficient driving course.
We cut to Jared climbing the stairs up to the truck’s cab, Brett follows in him up and says:
Even cutting back on engine idling saves us a lot.
Now we cut to Jared and Brett inside a dumper, Brett says:
By doing all of these things, the investment has paid itself back within a year and we’re now on track for saving $335,000, every year.
Jared looks down and reaches for a lever, he pushes it forward and says:
I’ve always wanted to do this.
We cut outside to see the hydraulics kick in and the back of the truck lifting up, tonnes of aggregate is delivered into a huge pile, Jared jumps out of the cab looks pretty satisfied with that, as he sums up:
