Whiteware
Whiteware includes fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers and dryers.
When the last study was done between 1996 and 2006, this group of products accounted for roughly 20% of electricity each year in the average home. [1]
We tend to hold on to these larger appliances for between 10 - 15 years. So choosing the most efficient model that fits your needs will save you a lot of money in ther long run. There can be quite a bit of difference between the amount of electricity similar appliances use so it pays to shop around.
All whiteware products carry energy rating labels, and the most efficient dishwashers and washing machines carry the ENERGY STAR® mark.
